Things You Should Consider While Removing a Large Tree From a Garden

Matt Thompson
An unwanted humongous tree takes away a big chunk of the working area from your garden. Sometimes you can’t do much except for cutting the tree down. There are some particular things to keep in mind while considering removing a large tree from your garden. Things can go wrong very quickly. You might have seen those funny videos on the internet.
Safety is your main concern while cutting down a tree that’s pretty big. You need to wear the right gears. Having the right safety gear is paramount to your success. Where the tree falls and what angle to cut the tree and how to do all of this while being as safe as possible? Not easy.

Here’s what you need first-

  • A helmet to protect your head. You need to get a logger’s helmet for the job.
  • Get earmuffs to protect your ears and a face screen to protect the eyes.
  • Get safety glasses to prevent dust molecules from getting in the eyes.
  • You will also need Kevlar chaps. It will immediately stop a chain if you drop the bar close to your leg.
  • Buy felling wedges that will prevent your equipment from getting pinched while cutting the tree.

Calculate the felling zone

Trees are much taller than we think and they reach further. When planning on tree felling, estimate where a tree will fall. Use the “ax handle trick”.
You start with, holding your ax at your arm’s length, keep one of your eyes closed and back away from the tree. Stand in a position far enough where the top of the ax lines up with the top of the tree while the bottom is in even position with the base. The position where your feet are right now should be where the treetop will fall.

Know the cutting zone and clear it out

You can’t be completely sure where the tree will fall and clearing path to keep space for an escape route is a good idea. Make sure you do this correctly and the escape route is safe and free from abstraction as people might trip themselves. Leave no room for catastrophe to happen. Keep two extra escape routes on the non-falling zone.

Knowing the risks and executing the plan

Study the tree and keep in mind the factors like dead branches, the side it’s leaning towards, buildings around you, power lines, and fences, etc. If you are worried about things going wrong because of many nearby buildings or other abstractions, stop the process and call a professional to help you.
The prices aren’t cheap but it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you want to know how much it might cost use a large tree removal cost calculator. Know the anatomy of the tree and how to do a proper notch. Plan the notch and execute the cut.
These are very intricate matters and if you do not know how to do them, don’t attempt them. Professionals exist for a reason and risking your life is worth nothing. Always keep a lookout. It might save your life.
