How to Get Rid of Squirrels in the Attic

Rujuta Borkar
Squirrels in attic can get to be really irritating at times. Take a look through the varied ways in which one can get rid of these squirrels.
Squirrels are cute and everything but they can be real pests at times, forcing us to adopt pest control means to curb their activity. You might think what can a fluffy, bug-eyed, innocent little creature like the squirrel do? Just set a squirrel into the attic or garden at night and see havoc it causes.
Squirrels aren't so innocent once inside the attic or garden. They are known to disrupt the contents of the house searching for materials to use in their homes. They do this by biting and chewing on cables and furniture to rip open clothes and carry them along. They are also known to leave behind feces or dander and transfer fleas into the home.
All these elements can cause havoc in your homes as well as lead to health risks to you and your pets. That is why it becomes important to know how to get rid of them and that is exactly what we shall be going through here.

Trap the Squirrel

You can trap the squirrel in the attic or find out what its habitat is and trap it there. You'll need to observe its usual route and see what it does and where it goes. Then observe where it enters the attic from and you could place your trap there.
Don't forget to keep a bait in the trap (peanut butter is known to work best). There are many types of traps in the market and you could choose the most convenient for you, keeping the size of the squirrel in mind. It will be more easy for you to place the trap near the squirrel's home rather than the attic as this will ensure more success.

Squirrel Repellent

Another effective method that has been known to work is the use of repellent sprays. You can make your own homemade squirrel repellent and use that to get rid of the squirrels. Spraying the contents of this spray around the attic will lead to a strong smell that repels the squirrels by irritating their noses and causing them to avoid the attic.

Prevent its Intrusion

These are some ways to prevent squirrels from entering the attic.
  • Keep the garden and attic clean. Do not store garbage and clean the foliage that falls, or the squirrels will scrounge it for nuts and seeds.
  • Check the house and attic for places that the squirrels can enter from. Once you find them cover them with steel wires (anything else and the squirrels will chew right through it).
  • Trim the branches that fall against the house which can act as a means for the squirrels to enter.
  • Squirrels are also attracted to the bird feeders around the garden and therefore make their way into that. One great way of how to get rid of squirrels in the attic is to use squirrel-proof bird feeders such that the squirrels are not able to access the food that is kept out for the birds.
And that is how you get rid of squirrels in attic and keep the attic free. Make sure that you do not poison them though, cause that might pose a risk to your pets and cause the attic to become toxic.
