Here are a few tips to get rid of bats, when they leave their roost in search of food.

Bats are nocturnal feeders, and they love to relish on pests, such as mosquitoes and moths. They can eat up to 600 - 1000 mosquitoes in an hour. Are you aware of the fact these birds are nature's way of pest control?

However, they are not entertained in an area, which is inhabited by human population. The reason is they are considered to be vectors of many communicable diseases, such as SARS, Henipavirus, West Nile Virus, and rabies. These diseases are spread from them to human beings.

Ways to Get Rid of Bats

✔ If you want to get rid of a bat from your home, ask the family members to go into one room and shut that door and the window. You could then open all the other windows and the back and front doors of your house. Eventually, the bat is likely to fly out. But, in case it doesn't fly out, catch it using your fishing net. Take it outside and release the bird.

✔ If the bat problem is serious, then you need to first find the areas where the bats roost. For instance, if they have made the attic of your home their habitat, then at night when they are hunting for food, you could close the attic windows. If they are staying in a hole, close to your home, you could plug the hole once you are sure they are out hunting.

✔ Another option is usage of mothballs. These are good bat repellents. All you have to do is take a nylon sock and fill it with mothballs. Now, hang it in the roosting areas. The odor will stop them to come there.

You might have to do this again, as bats have a tendency to come back to their old homes. If this doesn't work, you can put some lighting in the roost areas. Bats prefer dark areas and lights will stop them from coming there.

✔ To get rid of the bats that are roosting outside your house, you could use a can of cat or dog repellent. Never ever spray it directly on the bats. Wait till they are out hunting to spray the repellent on the areas where they usually roost.

✔ Another solution is to install fiberglass insulation in the places where the bats roost. The fiberglass irritates their skin. Hence, it should keep them at bay.
